99% Invisible: 513- The Safety Bicycle
My good friend Chris Nylund sent me this podcast about the evolution of the bicycle, how it became a cultural phenomenon in the late 1800s, then a symbol of protest, and a lightning rod for political controversy. And we’ll find out what’s next for the bike in a world built for cars.
In other news, Chris also has a seven-part, cinematic, docu-series about cooking in France! Check it out!
JOBST BRANDT RIDE BIKE!
My friend Max Leonard's new project with Isola Press is about to launch, the story of one of cycling's most influential outsiders and inspiring explorers.
Jobst was a California pioneer of riding road bikes off-road, who spent almost fifty years lightweight touring and adventuring in the Alps, always carrying a camera to document his trip.
He was also the brilliant mind behind many innovations, such as the bike computer and smooth tires, and, through his mentoring of Tom Ritchey, even influenced the birth of the mountain bike.
